How the OtakuGraph Score works
Draft: this text is still being reviewed and some details (in brackets) are not filled in yet.
Every episode, season and series on OtakuGraph has one score: the OtakuGraph Score, from 1 to 10. We compute it ourselves from several sources, so you don't have to compare different sites and scales.
Where the ratings come from
- MyAnimeList episode polls and series scores (through the Tenrai API).
- IMDb episode and series ratings (through the OMDb API).
- Our editors, who check data, fix mistakes and add ratings for anime a source doesn't list.
We don't show the individual source numbers, only the combined score. See data credits for details and licences.
How an episode's score is made
- Same scale. Each rating is converted to 1–10. For example, a MyAnimeList episode poll of 4.32 out of 5 becomes 8.47.
- Weighting. Sources with more votes count more, but with diminishing returns: a million votes don't drown out everything else.
- Combining. The weighted ratings are averaged into one number.
- Thin data. When an episode has very little data, its score is gently pulled toward the season's average, so one small sample can't swing it too far. With normal amounts of data this has almost no effect.
- Rounding. Scores are shown with two decimals.
Seasons and series
- A season's score is the average of its episodes' scores.
- A series score is the average of all its main TV episodes, so it always matches the graph.
- Recap episodes get their own score but are left out of season and series averages. Filler episodes count, because they are part of what you watch.
- Movies, OVAs and specials have their own scores and don't change the series average.
When there is no score
- "Not rated yet" means no source has rated it yet. We never show 0 in its place.
- Episodes that haven't aired have no score and are hidden from graphs and tables until they air.
Keeping it accurate
- Data is updated automatically several times a day. Each page shows when its data last changed.
- When sources disagree strongly, or a score jumps suddenly, it is flagged for our editors to check.
- Every change our editors make is recorded and can be reversed.
